About the project
The PROMOTE project is an ongoing innovative initiative funded under the Partnership for Excellence - Centres of Vocational Excellence, aimed at enhancing the skills and professional development of staff within the European correctional justice system. This project aligns with broader European efforts to advance educational standards and rehabilitation methods within correctional facilities, with the goal of promoting a more effective and humane criminal justice system. The primary objective of the PROMOTE project is to improve the professional skills of prison staff to meet the evolving demands of correctional environments. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by these professionals, the project seeks to introduce innovative educational and training practices that are specifically tailored to the needs of correctional facilities. A significant focus is being placed on enhancing the well-being of prison staff, with the aim of improving job satisfaction, reducing turnover, and fostering a positive work environment. Additionally, the project emphasizes the development of inclusive educational practices to address the diverse backgrounds and needs of correctional staff.
The PROMOTE project addresses a wide range of stakeholders, including correctional educators and trainers, correctional administration and management, policymakers and regulatory bodies, academic and research institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), European and international networks, inmates and former inmates, as well as the general public and media. By engaging these diverse groups, the project aims to create a comprehensive and inclusive approach to reforming correctional education and training across Europe.
To achieve its objectives, the PROMOTE project employs a multifaceted approach that combines research, development, and practical implementation. Extensive research is being conducted to identify the current gaps and needs in the training of correctional staff. Based on this research, training modules and educational materials are being developed, drawing from the latest pedagogical theories and practices. These materials are then disseminated through workshops and seminars organized for prison educators and trainers, providing them with new methodologies and tools to enhance their work.
To ensure the effectiveness of these new educational models, the PROMOTE project is implementing pilot programs within selected European correctional facilities. These pilot programs allow for the testing and refinement of the proposed approaches, ensuring that they are practical and beneficial in real-world settings.
